Upon Angelica’s request, the maidens gathered dried wood from the area for a fire. Avril crouched down in the darkness and picked up a dry piece of wood. “I’m surprised Marley was invited to join in tonight’s circle,” she said.
Hailey stood where she was for several minutes, just staring at Marley gathering wood. “Me, too, this situation is far too important.”
Avril kept her eyes on her. “After everything she has done for Lilith. She supports every negative idea she has,” she said.
“The High Priestess thinks it’s best if we let her help,” she decided, placing the dried wood inside the stone circle, for a fire.
The maidens sat cross-legged on sacred ground. Avril noticed the dried, colored autumn leaves littered the forest floor, while Priestess Angelica built a fire in the center of the stone ring. A chill wind was blowing. Avril shivered. She closed her eyes and inhaled the fresh, cool air. It soared into her lungs and heart. She freed her body from impurities as she exhaled. She opened her eyes. Flame and smoke poured upward. The heat gave warmth.
Angelica looked over at Hailey and asked, “Would you give a reason for a Blessing spell?”
“A Blessing spell is a prayer to ask for support from the elemental forces and the positive energy of the Universe for some sort of healing needed within the recipient. The spell may involve a thought or behavior to be removed or balanced, to mature. During the ritual, stronger energy is channeled from the Universe to build hope, strength and confidence. When psychic power is at its peak it is released and left to the will of the Higher Forces to direct toward the goal," she said quietly in response.
Angelica smiled. “That’s right,” she said impressed by what she heard.
The Priestess looked directly at Cortney and asked her to describe a Binding spell.
“A Binding spell commands a particular thing to take place without the co-operation of others involved,” she answered with confidence in her voice. “The spell is cast to make someone do something they don’t want to or against their human nature. Manufactured images made from wax, clay, wood or metal and herb and personal items, or a stuffed puppet, are generally incorporated so the identification will be stronger. The spell could only be broken when the manufactured image is discovered and destroyed." She paused. "A Binding spell could be used to remove a hex or curse. It requires a great deal of energy, concentration and power to build up in a steady accelerated rhythm to bring the thought into form.”
Avril looked at Marley, who was looking down at the fire and didn’t make eye contact.
The Priestess looked at the maidens. “Be sure when a Binding spell is cast, it harms none and is for the greater good, for a wise woman takes responsibility for her deeds,” she warned them quietly.
“Marley, what is the proper procedure used to neutralize harmful intent?”
Marley shifted her in her seat. “One should not send negative energies back onto the sender for it will only cause psychic warfare. Protection should be sent to the recipient and command the harmful energies to be neutralized with the power of the white, invisible light, Divine energy, love,” she answered, feeling nervous.
Avril and Hailey looked at each other, but said nothing.
Hailey and Avril exchanged glances as Ceserea first consecrated the area by banishing all baneful influences. Aging, with a shock of white hair and eyes gleaming with wisdom, she walked three times outside the stone circle, carrying a lit white pillar candle as she spoke. “Any chaotic energy leave the area within the circle of stones.” Ceserea stepped over the stones with the aid of Angelica. She sat down in the east quarter, Angelica, the south. Ceserea laid a white cloth on the ground then set up the altar. She arranged the elemental tools to correspond to the direction and element attributes. A gold pentacle was placed to the north. A censer with frankincense incense to protect and bless was assigned to the east. To the south, a hazel wand known as the all-around wise woman’s wand, and a gold chalice was placed west. The left half of the altar was dedicated to the Lady and the right half, the Lord. Magical stones, herbs and crystals were kept nearby for use.
Ceserea reached into the pocket of her robe and pulled out a matchbox and removed a matchstick. She struck the match against the box’s side then placed the flame in the altar candle wicks and incense. The scent of frankincense brought calmness.
Ceserea raised the censer and swirled it three times around the altar to consecrate the elemental tools. A band of smoke coiled in the air as she said, “Thrice around, the wicks I pray to remove all negative influences. Allow the unfavorable energies to sink into the ground to be reborn in positive power.”
Avril felt favorable energy grow up from the soil within the stone circle. Ceserea searched through a black leather bag Angelica had carried on the journey which now sat beside her. Hailey had a confident aura while Cortney grinned with excitement. Both waited to see what would appear in Ceserea’s hands. Beside Avril, Marley bit her nails down to the quick. Avril stared at her. Marley attempted to hide the gnawed nails up the sleeves of her robe. Marley hesitated, and then whispered, “Nerves. I’m a little frightened and threatened by the unknown.”
“Calm your breaths, and feel the energy flow into your body, then slowly exhale,” she told her. “There is nothing to worry about we’ve dealt with the Dark Wise Woman before and neutralized her corruption. I’m sure we can handle any of her counterparts.”
Marley shifted uneasily. “I am trying to stay calm, to be sensible,” she said.
“I’m stating a fact. You need to allow your body to stay loose,” she explained. “If not, the energy will become blocked. In order to be successful, we all have to focus on the same goal with compatible energies. The positive and constructive formed energy will respond appropriately to any obstacles.”
Marley took a deep breath and let it out, then seemed to gather herself. “I’ll do what I can,” she said in a low voice.
“There is no shame in fear but if you face the emotion and go with the flow of events, the fear can be overcome,” she assured her.
Marley nodded in agreement.
“Real magick, as any witch knows, comes from within” she said. “And I firmly believe good always conquers evil.”
Angelica stirred the fire. She fed the hot flames some wood. The flames engulfed the branches and twigs. The High Priestess laid a puppet just below the lit white pillar candle. The cloth figure represented a woman. The color of cloth used symbolized the female’s birth date. Also, the necessary personal details had been added to show her eyes, hair and sex. Ceserea cleared her throat. She then began to explain what she had in mind for the evening. “Good and evil are deeply rooted in life. The two must be experienced to have a natural balance. We all know that Dark Wise women alter the natural order of the Universe for their own personal gain. Manipulation by a Dark Wise woman has tossed the balance into an extreme which we need to neutralize for the good of all. All your training and acquired skills will be tested this evening.”
Angelica stirred the wood. Hot sparks flew up to the sky while Ceserea continued to talk.
“A Dark Wise woman, for personal gain, has taken over our kin, wise woman Gene’s shadow. The Dark One constantly interferes in her daily affairs by manipulating the shadow to do her will. We have gathered on sacred ground to neutralize the Dark One’s harmful intent.”
Cortney turned to the High Priestess and asked her, “Why would someone do this?”
The High Priestess looked at her. “People do desperate things to gain control,” she answered.
Angelica, who had been silent, spoke. “The Dark One possesses plenty of magical power. She has snatched a fellow witch Gene’s shadow. According to research found in the Coven's Book of Shadows, the Dark Wise woman applied a spell to carry the shadow across water and claim ownership. At the Dark One’s command, she takes control over the wise woman’s life in a harmful manner.”
“Tonight,” Ceserea added, “we need to restore the shadow to its rightful owner to free wise woman Gene from the curse.”
Angelica fed the fire as Ceserea continued. “An hour is more than enough time to do what is needed to be done.”
With the fire ablaze, the High Priestess summoned the Higher Power who dwell in Divine Light, for protection, guidance and strength.
Hand in hand they bowed. Avril closed her eyes briefly. She gazed up at the enormous night sky and saw not a star shone. Suddenly, she witnessed a white light of energy spiraled downward upon them and rapidly circled through their joined hands. Energy surged in power between them. Marley gripped Avril’s hand tightly. Avril's hand throbbed between them. She looked down and saw that Marley’s knuckles burned white. “Marley, my hand aches from the pressure. Please don’t hold so tight,” she quietly whispered. “You need to stay relaxed so that our positive energy can merge with the current to draw on the power that flows around us.”
Marley nodded a swift approval, closed her eyes and began to slow down her breathing to calm herself. Avril was grateful as she loosened her grip.
The wind hummed past Avril’s ears as it swirled rapidly around the protective stones. The ritual objects, crystals, natural rocks, pebbles and stones twinkled in pinks, blues, greens, and bright yellows in the spiraling light. Avril heard her breath - the deep in, the deep out. She felt her heart pounding against her chest as she waited in anticipation for the Dark Wise woman to appear.
The High Priestess took a dominant role in the rite. “By the power of wick and wax, let the Dark One appear before me. The Dark wise woman who laid the curse upon Gene, I conjure thee, this is my will so mote it be,” she demanded. The High Priestess began to chant a protective spell in the Old Tongue. The autumn wind howled through the trees as the High Priestess’ words echoed amongst the wood. Angelica repeated the words in English. “The bond is too great for darkness to break. Our light is great, our love is real. Fear will have no hold, our bond conquers all,” she chanted. “So Shall It Be Done, not by our will alone, but by the will of the Higher Forces who dwell in Divine light energy: love.”
Avril and the maidens joined in the chanting. Pure white light surged between them then a bolt of energy shot out from Angelica’s third eye and streaked to the left. Avril felt an electrifying jolt as it connected to center of her forehead then make its way to the right to Cortney. It flew from her to the left to join with Marley’s forehead. The bolt moved to the right and landed center of Hailey’s forehead and back to Angelica’s forehead. The formation had joined to create the protective pentacle.
At midnight, the witching hour, when the veils between the two worlds were at their thinnest, Avril was the first to sense the evil-doer’s presence. She noted in the distance, behind Cortney and Hailey, two deep red eyes which were luminescent. The eyes glowed nearly scarlet moved toward them. Then, in slow motion, the red eyes circled the stones and examined them, one by one. Suddenly, the glowing red eyes split into four small black dots. A wrinkled, narrow forehead formed with a sharp nose, wide mouth, thin lips and a sharp pointed chin materialized. Her long, silvery, stringy hair blew with the wind. From the neck down was the body of a crone. She dressed in a long black cloak with a hermit’s hood over her head. The sleeves of her black robe flowed down to rest on the ground. In her bony hand she held a book entitled ’Wizard’s Magic.’ Avril saw on the cover, an upside-down pentacle, a symbol of the dark craft. The Dark One clicked her teeth together three times then, with a cunning tone, spoke. “You summon me from beyond to know truth? To grant a desire? Is it a prediction wanted to clear the past, a pleasure granted here and now or a future to be told for tomorrow?” She clicked her teeth together as she waited for an answer. Her sharp claw-like nails dug into the worn leather on the cover of the Wizard book.
The Dark wise woman clicked her teeth together three times “What is wanted of me,” she demanded.
“You have something which doesn’t belong to you,” the High Priestess calmly accused her.
The red eyes of the evil doer stared unblinkingly that sent shivers up Avril’s spine, yet she kept faith that they could accomplish the task at hand.
“I know the deceit which has been cast,” the High Priestess said. “The spell must be overturned and the shadow taken must be returned to the rightful body for your secret is no more.”
The Dark One clicked her teeth together three times. Her expression was volatile. “I will do as I please,” she said in a venomous tone. She approached the stone circle, gliding like a ghost and raised her arm. Avril watched as the Dark Wise woman make a fist. She tried to smash through the protective ring. Blue electrifying sparks flew outward from the impact.
The words had caused an intense reaction within the Dark One. She hissed, standing only on her right foot, and with the right eye closed, she outstretched her left arm with fist clenched and the index and middle finger pointing straight at the High Priestess she delivered the hand-of-power gesture the evil horns.
The High Priestess stopped a moment, she had to breathe. “The bond is too great for darkness to break. Our light is great, our love is real. Fear will have no hold, our bond conquers all. So Shall It Be Done, not by our will alone, but by the will of the Higher Forces who dwell in Divine light energy: love,” she chanted again.
Avril noticed a sudden change in the Dark One’s appearance. With every word spoke by the High Priestess, she was becoming more transparent. All Avril could think of was the curse to control, harass, to harm Gene was slowly loosing its hold.
The High Priestess stopped again. She concentrated upon the intent. “The bond is too great for the darkness to break. Our light is great, our love is real. Fear will have no hold, our bond conquers all. So Shall It Be Done, not by our will alone, but by the will of the Higher Forces who dwell in Divine light energy: love,” she chanted through the breeze.
Then, as if overpowered the Dark Wise woman released the cry of a banshee. Gene’s shadow was sucked from her being into the poppet. When the energy had reached its climax and the hex-breaking was complete the Dark One clicked her teeth together three times, and then rapidly spun her cape around her aged frame and vanished.
Cortney shook her head in disbelief at what she saw. Hailey appeared flabbergasted while Marley was tense with fear. Intense joy leaped into Avril’s eyes. “By the power of white magick, we triumphant over the dark,” she announced. “With heart and mind I’m sure Gene’s shadow has been returned to its rightful owner.”
Avril glanced over to see the High Priestess. She looked pale and about to faint. Suddenly, she slumped over. At that moment, Angelica leaned over her to give her a hand to help her gain her balance. “Try some deep breathing to center yourself,” she said.
The High Priestess sat up. “All is well,” she reassured the maidens.
Angelica scattered a loaf of whole wheat bread around the stone circle to say thank you for Divine support. Then they headed back to the Mysticism School. The High Priestess walked beside Angelica and talked. “I need a few agile hands to design and sew the younger children’s costumes for Samhain,” she announced. “The younger ones have chosen to become a wise woman’s familiar, a power or token animal.”
Hailey looked back at the High Priestess and asked, “Have the children been shown their power animal during deep meditation?”
“No complexities are necessary to make a significant shift for the younger children to know their power animal,” she relied. “Children can accept both this earthly world and the spiritual Other World with equal validity. The children have been taught that animals think, feel, speak and do. And animals are credited to have supernatural powers and a kinship with spirit, since ancient times. They are associated with magick because the creatures are able to sense and predict future events. The children know a person’s power animals are often wise counselors and messengers with information to protect and guide.”
Cortney made her way to Hailey’s side. “We would be happy to lend a hand. The costume for bird spirits should be a feathered dress and soft fur and hide with horns or antlers would be good for animal totems.”
With Marley by her side, Avril walked along the trail. “For tree spirits I suggest we dress the children in green foliage, brown slacks for the trunk and a suitable color for flowers,” she said.
The evening air whipped by. Marley tucked a strain of hair behind her ear. “The costumes need to have character,” she added. “An opening needs to be left for arms, completely cover the torso, and soft bands placed around the neck and armholes would keep the costume in place.”
“All of that sounds quite creative,” the High Priestess remarked, as they walked back to Mysticism School for witches'.
