A short descripition:

Sharing our stories is one of our most empowering gifts. In this issue, we have gathered stories of renewal, recovery, and recovery that we hope will brings those qualities to you, our beloved readers.

Have you ever walked a labyrinth? Jen McConnell finds wisdom — and challenge — in "Walking a Spiral Path." Finding community in a yearly gathering, Jamie Martinez Wood shares her joyous journey of renewal and rebirth in "The Healing Cloak of Womanhood."

Sometimes, what we need for our own renewal is simply a place that is solely our own. Writer Clara Oropeza dedicates a tiny shed to her writing, and shares her experience in "At Hestia's Hearth." Deborah Baudin finds her own voice at last in her story, "Switching Tracks," while Freya Velander puts her terrifying dreams to rest when she travels to her ancestor’s homeland in "Safe in Freya's Arms."

Picture

Although most of these stories are gentle, this issue's goddess is anything but meek and mild. Diana Paxson examines the mythology, ritual, and presence of the often-terrifying Hindu goddess in "Kali Ma: Dancing in the Dark."

Our regular columnists bring their own healing voices to this issue: herbalist Susun Weed teaches us to welcome fairies; Alison Leigh Lilly describes her child-free life and how she midwives the lives of others; Janet Callahan describes how mothering her medically-fragile children requires her to be open to change in her family's lives.

Picture
When Donna Henes needed catharsis one summer a decade ago, she found herself on the beach in a Summer Solstice ritual to Yemaya, while Lizann Bassham spins a story of how encounters with rattlesnakes have informed her journey into Cronehood and Anne Hill offers a cautionary tale of how healing can bring unexpected (even traumatic) life changes.

Danielle Blackwood teaches how astrology illuminates our life passages; Crystal Blanton shares her path to justice; thealogian Nancy Vedder-Shults muses on how primal nature re-enchants our lives, Leslie Linder describes the ancient magic of honeybees; and our goddess-cook Teresa Marbut weaves a sweet river song with a recipe dedicated to Oshun.

Picture
Plus goddess-poetry, reviews of books, music, and oracle decks, and the wonderful voices of our readers in our "readers write" department, the Rattle. We end with a meditation on a healing move from the busy city to a remote country farmstead by Liz Bohm. What a lovely, healing, magical issue!
BBI Media

Over the course of the last several decades, the Neo-Pagan movement has grown and changed dramatically. Where have we been and, more importantly, where are we headed? In this Magick Moment discussion with Publisher Anne Newkirk-Niven (Sage Woman, Witches & Pagans, and Crone Magazine as well as PaganSquare.com) we get to learn from Anne's unique position and history within the Pagan Community.

Signs of Witchcraft Elemental Earth Air Fire Water Wiccan Pagan Charm Bracelet
Featuring pure ice clear Quartz gemstone beads, the universal crystal and power stone, edged in silver and hand wire wrapped, this bracelet depicts Wiccan Signs and the elements, the items commonly used and associated with Wiccan Practice.

Four hand stamped charms depicting “Fire” “Air” “Water” and “Earth”, the four elements sit amongst the following charms:

A Candlestick
The candle flame symbolises the light, which is the most highly refined image of the Divine that the human mind can perceive.

Goddess
Many Witches and pagans wear and use symbols of the Goddess, since She is primary in nature-based religions. The Goddess is the Earth; the Earth is the Goddess. As is the Moon, the Ocean, and the very Cycle of Life. As a nature religion, the Goddess is inextricably interwoven with Wicca.

Witches Boot

What witches bracelet would be complete without her little pointy boot??

The Green Man
In Wicca, the Green Man has often been used as a representation of the Horned God.

Chalice
A cup or wine-type glass of any material is one of the most important altar tools. The chalice is another Wicca symbol for the Great Goddess, the Mother of the Universe. The chalice is likely a modern version of the cauldron. It represents yin ["female"] energy of water.

Cauldron
In Wicca the cauldron is associated with the goddess Cerridwen. Most often a cauldron is made of cast iron and is used to burn loose incense, to make black salt (used in banishing rituals), for mixing herbs, or to burn petitions. Cauldrons on an altar it represents earth because it is a working tool. Our cauldron charm sits on three legs and has a little frog swimming in it.

A Witch On Her Besom
Well, it just had to be on here didn’t it!!!

Picture
Besom
Our besom charm is crafted with a Pentagram to the top of the bristles. Besoms are the broomsticks traditionally associated with witches. As a tool, the besom is usually thought of as masculine in nature due to its phallic shape and symbolism. However the besom's components are of both masculine and feminine orientation. The ash stave, is masculine in nature while the birch used for the bristles is thought of as feminine in nature. The besom is thought to be involved with fairies.

Pentagram
The Pentacle is the prime energy-containing Wicca symbol. It contains, in essence, the Universe within it. Part of the Pentacle's power of protection relies on the fact that it is drawn with a single unbroken line. This leaves no gateways for unwanted energies to enter, or for Power to dissipate.

A Spiral
A witchcraft symbol of the goddess; it is also symbolic of the journey of life.

A Frog
A familiar and a symbol steeped in myth and magic surrounding Wicca.

Book of Shadows
One of our own exclusive charms, the Book of Shadows, or grimoire, is a hand-written collection of Wiccan rites and practices that you have collected. Thus your grimoire becomes a record of your magickal work as well as a "recipe book" for future magick. It also becomes a reflection of your journey in the Craft. Our book charm has a Pentagram to the back and text detail to the inner.

Blessed Be
An abbreviated version of a blessing called the 5-fold kiss.

Witch's Hat
This may be the most typical Wicca symbol. But there is a good reason. The Witch's Pointy Hat, like the sorcerer's hat, was created as a pyramid - a shape which is known to raise energy frequencies. This pointed hat, or Apex, was designed to funnel Divine energies into one. Or, at least to suggest that this power was coming from Heaven, in the case of religious leaders. The Witches' Hat supposedly has the power to increase intelligence.

A Crescent Moon with pure Quartz Crystal.

Athame
The ritual knife, or athame, is one of the basic Wicca altar tools. Traditionally black-handled, the athame lives in the East, the direction that represents thought, discernment, beginnings, and choice. The knife represents the ability to separate things, to make distinctions. It also symbolises making choices, because for everything you choose, you let go of other options - essentially "killing" them.

A Triskelle
A symbol of the circle of nature, life, death and resurrection .

A Cat
In some traditions of modern Wicca and Paganism, the concept of an animal familiar is incorporated into practice. Our little cat charm wears a Pentacle collar.

Solitary Witch by Silver Ravenwolf

4/2/2014

This week on a sunny afternoon my friend Jen and I had a late lunch at The Black Horse Pub.  Afterwards we decided to take a walk downtown.  We went into a fabulous used book store.  I instinctively headed toward the New Age section, and saw A Book of Shadows For The New Generation - Solitary Witch by Silver Ravenwolf.

The Solitary Witch is a big book!  I picked up the book, open to a page and read carefully.  Word for word - line by line to determine if the information was right for me.

The book was, as you might guess, quite interesting.  Something said, "Buy the book."  I'm glad I did!

I would advise witches to read, The Book of Shadows For The New Generation -Solitary Witch.  An instructional method can help you to become a better person.  Whatever your interest - shadows of religion & mystery, spells, charms, formularies, rituals, and all manners of enchantments Silver Raven Wolf's method is one of the best.

Preface - The Essence of Witchcraft - Silver Ravenwolf

The essence of Witchcraft is transformation.  The idea is to take the "you" currently present and accounted for and change your essence into something better, greater, stronger, and incredibly dynamic.  Being a Witch means to want to work everyday to be a better person.  When you change yourself, then the world around you cannot help but change.  There's no getting around it.  All this changing can be hard work-and there are certain aspects of the path that require time, effort, and energy.  Although many of the things you truly want can be achieved in a short time with the techniques presented in this book, there are other issues in your life that will require patience, effort, and practice to reach your ultimate goals.  Thats okay.  if you didn't have to work at some things, then the study wouldn't seem worthwhile.  To be a Witch, you must be brave enough to face everything inside of you, and have the courage to change the things you do not like.  Being a Witch has nothing to do with spells, rituals, and unusual clothing - they are the fun stuff.  To be a Witch is to desire personal transformation.

Reading a passage from "Solitary Witch: The Ultimate Book of Shadows for the New Generation" By Silver Ravenwolf. Hope everything's going great with my beautiful subscribers!

SEVERED TIES DEBUT AT CHAPTERS BOOK STORE
                                                            on 11/12/13
Picture
Many writers - including me - have the same dream with the book they wrote.  They want the story published and on bookshelves.
Picture

I knew I made it as a writer when the reputable publisher Damnation Books signed me.

On 11/12/13 I accomplished what some would deem as a small miracle.  My Teen, paranormal, magic and realism book Severed Ties, makes it print debut on the local interest section at Chapters Book Store.  The store manager was happy to help give Severed Ties more exposure.

Picture
I gambled on myself.  I did, and look what happened - I am now a
professional writer (Thanks Acquisitions Editor, Erin Lale and Editor, Barbara Legge) with a print book on the bookshelf at Chapters Book Store.

There is a thrill knowing someone will pick Severed Ties off the bookshelf and scan the back cover.  If the story I wrote speaks directly to them they will read the book.

As gratifying as this moment is there are struggles we all go through as writers to accomplish our dreams.  Readers love to have a chance to meet and talk to their favorite Authors.  I'm intimidated by the book signing process.  Speaking in public is terrifying.  Anything can come out of my mouth.

I am anxious that I'm not going to meet their expectations.  I don't want to disappoint my readers giving the answers to their probing questions.

I am determined to keep things moving forward in my writing
career.  It will take courage to step out of my comfort zone and make myself accessible.  Somehow I will need to break out of solitary confinement  and meet and talk to readers.

In the meantime, I am preparing two books At the Edge (There is support from the unseen to guide our lives on earth) and No Reins the extended edition (A heart-stopping story of attraction and self discovery) for publication from Eternal Press in Santa Rose CA.

Exclusive Excerpt!

Picture
At last!  On the Edge, originally published by  Club Lighthouse Publishing  in May 2010 has been completely revised.  Now titled "AT THE EDGE."

This week I posted an exclusive excerpt for my readers to get glimpse of the YA, magic realism, paranormal book. I'm leaving this excerpt up for only a few days, and then will be taking the read down. I'm excited to search for aYA book publisher to discover the best home for the new and improved story.
.
About the Book "AT THE EDGE," -  Real people developing relationships; while Carm is struggling to pick up the pieces after the death of her husband.

Two Quick Questions -

1. How important is it to you to create likeable characters?

I portray the characters inner characteristics and emotions as they struggle with issues of their own.  The characters are realistic that the readers will believe.  Tough and practical Paige takes command; Roxy under a watchful eye intimidates; always helpful Lizzy goes with the flow and Carm is consumed with sorrow and mental anguish.  Gretchen, a witch is a welcome relief from life's pressures.  To add support and conflict to the story are Thomas a friend everyone wants to deserve and Philip is certainly not safe to trust.

2. What do you most hope that readers will take away from the book?

In this book I provide a unique insight into the drug world and mysticism – addiction and the belief that direct knowledge of ultimate reality is attainable through intuition and the unseen world.  I hope the reader will begin to believe if you change your choices while guided by Spirit you can change your life for the better.

Till Death & Beyond

2/2/2013

I would like to thank my readers who rushed out to bookstores to read my paranormal book Severed Ties.

http://DamnationBooks.com/book.php?isbn=9781615728206

Till Death and Beyond - The bond of love can bring two forbidden opposites together.

Till Death and Beyond opens with a teenage girl named Zoe, inexperienced in witchcraft, in the woods on a Full Moon cast a spell for a love she feels is lost to her.  The teenager new to magic, is careless of her words for her desire.  The spirit of a maiden witch appears.  At first the teenager is afraid of the ghostly figure, and then her curiosity calms her nerves.

The Spirit tells the tale how she and the love of her life were separated by ignorance.  Zoe, the teenage girl experiments with magic to reunite the Spirit with her long lost love.

As a direct result of the long hours I spent reading the history of witchcraft my novella Till Death and Beyond was created.

The main conflict in the short read is the Puritans attempting to keep evil from tarnishing their community and the witches strong belief based on the oneness of self an nature.   Puritans against the witches.  What happened and what it meant.

Historically the Puritans and witches were two very different groups of people with two very different belief systems.  Puritan America was based on clear roles between men, women, and God.  Witchcraft served as a system of explanations for the ways of nature and a method by which one could gain control over their life. Witches were considered enemies to their God.

Puritans linked witchcraft with the devil and hell because their first responsibility was to serve one God.  The Biblical regulative principle of worship and commandments was the puritan blueprint toward that duty.  Witchcraft became a crime against the church to rid those who did not dedicate themselves to their faith.  They became known as immoral and wicked people even though their faith exsisted long before the Purtian's belief system did.

I had a very specific idea in mind when I wrote Till Death and Beyond a love story between Emery a Puritan and Frye a witch and the petty rivalry connecting the two faith driven neighbors.  The main conflict between the Puritans and the witches' belief systems is the the theme of the romantic story.  I wanted to tell the important elements that are in the traditions and of the similarities and difference among them.  I hope to say to the reader the story isn't strictly romantic; it will have some history.

On this magical night.
So shall it be.

Wiccans and Pagans have an animal companion that they consider their familiar.  A familiar is part of the family.

A familiar is often defined as an animal with whom we have a magical connection.  If an animal has appeared in your life unexpectedly -- such as a stray cat that appears regularly, for instance -- it's possible that the animal may have been drawn to you magickally!
